Résumé du livre

Surveys the status of French Jewry during the era preceding the French Revolution in the regions where Jews were permitted to reside. Documents the events which led to their eventual emancipation in 1791. Compares the proposals of Abbé Grégoire with those of Jewish leaders, such as Berr-Isaac Berr. Presents the original texts of the debates in the General Assembly from 1789-92. Examines the attitudes of Napoleon towards the Jews as reflected in various proposals regarding their status during his reign, particularly the Assembly of Notables in 1806, convened to improve the status of the Jews in France. Pp. 159-251 present the transcripts of that Assembly.
