Prehistoric sequence derived from archaeological excavations in stratified deposits of the rock shelters in two adjacent ecological zones; a coastal plain and a plateau; marked cultural dichotomy between material in two zones; physiography, climate, flora and fauna; summary of archaeological results - earlier traditions found at Malangangerr and Nawamoyn on the plain and at Tyimede II in a valley on the plateau; later industry at Padypadiy and Tyimede I; carbon dates; human burials at all sites, artefacts of shell, wood, bone and stone; interpretation of results, differential preservation of cultural material, diffusion of ideas, techniques and artefacts; coexistence of discrete sub cultures in the area; seasonal variation of residence, diet and economy.
