Markus Mittringer has been a participating observer of the Austrian art scene for more than twenty-five years. His photographs are not result-oriented; he does not stage or light anything, does not need heavy equipment or privileged access; after all, he also wants to partake in the events that he occasionally captures. (Alfred Weidinger) From this participative perspective, amidst the celebratory atmosphere of Viennese bohemia, moments away from an epic crash, Mittringer takes his pictures. They show what one might have once expe- rienced, done, seen, or even missed or lost. Mittringer juxtaposes these pictures from past big-city nights with the timeless, melancholy impressions of a lonely country vagabond, keeping his respectful distance, like saying farewell.
