Résumé du livre

In recent years, the wartime losses suffered by the Yorkshire-based squadrons of No. 4 Group Royal Air Force and No. 6 Group Royal Canadian Air Force have been commemorated by the erection of twenty-three memorials throughout the country. Although this book gives details of each monument, its real purpose is to encourage readers to 'look beyond the stone' and to begin to appreciate the multiplicity of dangers that bomber crews faced and the courage they displayed, not especially in conspicuous acts of bravery - though this volume contains many instances of such - but in the mere fact that crews went out night after night in the knowledge that the odds favouring survival were very much stacked high against them.
