Data on Six Species of Needlefishes (Belonidae) from the Western Atlantic

Six species of four genera of needlefishes (Synentognathi, Belonidae) occur in the western Atlantic Ocean: Belone argala LeSueur, Strongylura notata (Poey), Strongylura timucu (Walbaum), Tylosurus acus (Lacépède), Tylosurus raphidoma (Ranzani), and Ablennes hians (Valenciennes). Data are given for these species on variations in numberable characters and ontogenetic changes in morphology and morphometry. Generic relationships, species differences, and ecological notes are discussed.
