Résumé du livre
The philological and linguistic scholar interested in non-European languages is all too often confronted with a basic problem: He cannot, as a rule, expect that comprehensive, detailed, reliable compilations of the specific vocabularies and source materials, directly required from an extensive literary corpus, be at hand. A positive exception is given by the classical language of Ancient Syria. In this case, the "Thesaurus" of Payne Smith represents, together with Brockelmann's Lexicon Syriacum, a lexical material excellently compiled and revised, and thus is truly instrumental to research work on the Semitistic, Syriologic, and Aramaistic field. Its high quality is not only guaranteed by the name of Payne Smith, but also by his staff: by outstanding experts of the Syriac language such as Quatremere, Bernstein, Field, and Roediger. The supplement, done by Payne Smith's daughter J. P. Margoliouth, completes this monumental work.
