The Art of English Poetry

Sir Edward Bysshe (c. 1610-1679) was a herald and politician. He was the author of The Art of English Poetry (1702). The book was an attack on traditional foot-based metrics. It consisted principally of a rhyming dictionary and an anthology of passages containing similes. The author formulated a system of versification which had never been expressed in theory before.
