Other papers document political developments in London and in South Carolina after the 1719 transition from Proprietary to Crown colony; including letters, 27 and 28 Sept. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, Mr. [Peregeine] Fury, and Lords of Trade, re his concern over the expected veto of quitrent and appropriation laws, and his fear that the people would resist paying the quitrents as in New England; 29 Oct. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, St. John, and Whitiker, re hardships suffered by Carolina subjects under the new regime, and expressing concern over the influence of St. John and Thomas Lowndes in prejudicing Horace Walpole to favor unpopular laws; and 18 Nov. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, re concern over St. John usurping the authority of the governor and council, and mentioning Jean Pierre Purry and his settlement of Purrysburgh, with 150 Swiss Protestant settlers.
