It traces the foundations of a national economy in Indonesia back to the establishment and elaboration of the colonial state. It presents results of recent research by Indonesian, Australian and Dutch scholars on such varied topics as economic policy before and after Indonesian independence, types of export production and factors of production during the late-colonial expansion as well as a synthesis in the field of Indonesian economic history.
