Images of the Cosmic Mountain

In Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist cosmology, the cosmic mountain (Mount Meru) is considered to be the centre of all the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual universes. The author explores nine sacred sites in Australia and Southeast Asia and their role in representing or communicating the concept of the cosmic mountain, and their shared characteristics. The sites discussed are: Uluru, Mount Penanggungan, Pura Besakih, Borobudur, Loro Jonggrang, Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Bayon, the Shwedagon and the Australian War Memorial.
