The story begins with Charlotte, an ordinary little girl who lives in an ordinary house on an ordinary street in London.  Charlotte has never left England, not even for a holiday,  but for as long as she can remember she has dreamed of visiting exotic cities in far-away places.  When her extravagant globe-trotting Auntie comes to stay, she fills Charlotte's head with wonderful stories about the extraordinary places she has been to and the worldly wonders she has seen.  She gives Charlotte a gift - an old dusty carpet that Charlotte doesn't like very much.  But Charlotte finds out that the carpet has hidden magic.  Not only can it fly but it can also grant her three wishes.  So Charlotte flies off on her magical carpet to distant lands in search of her dreams....
