This manual describes a method for fitting models in whichparameters enter nonlinearly and interpreting the results of theanalysis to assess model validity. It also documents thesoftware package SIMPLEX, a tool which easily allows the user toobtain optimal parameter estimates, produce various plots ofmodel predictions and likelihoods, and calculate parametercovariances. The manual presents the complete theory underlyingthe development and use of SIMPLEX, including descriptions ofthe SIMPLEX search method of function minimization, the utilityof various plots in assessing model fit, and the numericalcalculation of parameter covariances, standard deviations, andcorrelations. Suggestions are provided for operating the searchalgorithm efficiently and applying it in non-standard situations.
