Résumé du livre

The last century gave women of many countries a greater opportunity for independence, while for others it offered little relief from age-old oppression. But the recent explosion in communication and information technology has diminished our differences, increased our understanding, and established new avenues for political, social, and artistic discourse. Thus Claudia DeMonte, an artist and world traveler, asked female artists in 174 countries "What image represents 'woman'?" She then invited each artist to create a work of art that expressed her view of the essential quality of woman and assembled their work in a traveling exhibition.

Women of the World presents a global image of the female, c. 2000. Traditional art in ancient media gleefully joins with multimedia constructions. Individually superb, these works of art make an aggregate statement about the continuity of women's accomplishment.
