"Ce livre étudie les constructions en habeo "avoir" + participe parfait passif en -te -a, um (issu de *-to-) et habeo + infinitif en latin tardif et montre que les idées reçues sur la formation, dès la période latine, des périphrases verbales qui donneront le passé composé et le futur dans la plupart des langues romanes ne sont pas exactes. L'auteur corrige les interprétations habituelles antérieures de passages latins bien connus et souvent invoqués et retrace l'histoire de ces deux constructions dans la latinité, mettant en valeur leur absence de grammaticalisation, illustrée par une distribution non homogène dans les textes, par une faible fréquence et par une spécificité certaine de leurs emplois en latin tardif. This book is a study of the constructions in habeo "have" + the past passive participle in tus, -a, -um (from *-to) and habeo + the infinitive in Late Latin. The author shows that the generally held belief that the formation of the verbal periphrases that developed into the French passé composé and the future in most of the Romance languages had occurred already in Latin is incorrect. He invalidates the previous usual interpretations of a number of the most well-known and commonly quoted examples from Late Latin. The author traces the history of the two constructions back through the whole Latin period and shows that they had not yet been grammaticalized. He demonstrates this by their non homogeneous distribution in the texts, by the relatively low number of occurrences, and by the very specific nature of their uses in Late Latin."--P. [4] of cover.
