The Rev. Joseph Henry Hilts, descendant of German immigrants from the Palatinate, was born in Clinton Township, Upper Canada, the son of William Hilts and Mary Johnston. After Joseph's conversion to the Methodist Episcopal Church, he married Eliza Jane Griffin in Grimsby in 1843. He became an itinerant preacher in 1856 and served in the Garafraxa, Listowel, Teeswater, Mount Forest, Invermay, Meaford and Thornbury circuits. He was later presiding elder of the Huron district and served in the Kincardine circuit. He moved to Streetsville (Mississauga) in 1885 and died in Dundas. He had eight children. Text includes brief biographies of 80 clergymen mentioned in his memoirs.
