Author Valentine Baker (1827-1887) was a British soldier who served in the Crimean War and after an abrupt end to his career in the British army in about 1875, he served in the Ottoman Army during the war with Russia and commanded Suleiman's rearguard during the action of Tashkessen. His book "War in Bulgaria: A Narrative of Personal Experiences," details his service during the Turko-Russian war. After the peace he served in an administrative post in Armenia until 1882, when he was offered the command of the Egyptian Army, and although that offer was withdrawn he was given command of the Egyptian police, which post he held until his death in 1887. He assisted the British during a war in Sudan. He also wrote various books.
