The trilogy Bien-aimes les souffrants (Beloved sufferers) is a sweeping sage of dhimmitude explored through the Egyptian experience. Bat Ye'or, daughter of the Nile, devoted her life to studying and understanding the condition of Jews and Christians under Islam and she made known the words, dhimmi, dhimmitude, and Eurabia. But historical explorations do not allow us to elucidate events or capture their energy. We must account for the inner life of those who provoke these events or who are subjected to them and explain their relationships within society. Bien-aimes les souffrants (Beloved the Suffering..). is the great romantic fresco of events that we have not seen in the south and east of the Mediterranean and which are reaching us now. Bat Ye'or's novels remind us that history is never the story of a single generation. It can only be grasped by attending to the hidden life of peoples.
