"This exhibition marks an important milestone for the Balch Institute. It represents our first exhibit of works by a major American artist. Fortunately, Samuel Brown has worked closely with us in the presentation of this retrospective of more than a half century of his work. We are also pleased that the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and Howard University Gallery of Art have loaned us some of Mr. Brown's earliest and most significant works.
