John Neal interrogates the question of gender, particularly what it means to be a man, but also what it means to be a woman--all handled through an array of distinctive characters, while dealing with the then-still-vexing question of dueling. As well, he views our Indigenous peoples as often being more worthy than the dominant Euro-Americans. Finally, he questions what it mens to be a writer, burlesquing author and critics alike.
