Business and personal papers relating to Francis P. Harper. Includes 41 letters and postcards from Harper to his family, all written in 1877, relating to a trip to the western United States. The letters describe the Chicago stockyards, rail travel to Pueblo, working in gold mines at La Veta (a gold nugget is enclosed), the purchase of furs and their theft by Indians, and setting up a grocery in Denver. A small copy of the book of Proverbs belonging to Harper is inscribed "This book was carried by Francis P. Harper on his western trip when he was captured by the Indians." Business papers pertain to Harper's antiquarian book business, including the partnership agreement with his brother Lathrop, papers relating to the building, a pamphlet "A list of old books wanted by Francis P. Harper ...," and correspondence. Also included is an 1870 phrenological profile of Harper.
