Résumé du livre
Local elites resisted, diverted and appropriated metropolitan attempts to end or restrict access to and control of slaves. At the same time slaves were able to liberate themselves and take part in mass emancipations. The situation was transformed by the introduction of new economic opportunities and politicisation and social change among slaves themselves. North America: Ohio U Press
