Résumé du livre
Mr Henrie has the world at his feet, but the one thing he wants does not live within his own.
MR HENRIE
Lady Madeleine remembered the way his eyes lit up when he spoke about his travels to Europe and the New World, and the heaviness in his eyes when he had spoken about losing his father. How different he was now. The young boy she had known had now grown into a man. She closed her eyes and saw him: his rich black hair, strong Roman nose and high cheekbones. And when she imagined his full shaped lips and pearlescent blue eyes, she became flushed and felt faint. How different he looked now, but besides the changes on the outside, underneath that boy was still there. The one that possessed the kind of character and kindness she had never found within another and an integrity that would never waiver, no matter what temptation or foe may stand in his way. He was simply a man in every sense of the word within a woman's heart and mind. The kind of man she yearned for to round out all the qualities she lacked within herself.
LADY MADELEINE
Mr Henrie understood now his affections had always been founded upon the nostalgia he felt for his childhood and the part that she had played in his past, but, as he had come to know her as a woman, he saw her now as he had not allowed himself to see her before. She was so much more than he'd ever realised. It was true that she possessed an evident beauty that bewitched the eye that beheld her, but she was in her own way lovely and tender, and though her disposition somewhat taciturn, whenever he caught a glimpse of the person she kept locked away, she flowered with the brilliant colours of spring. She was lovelier than he could have ever known. Without him being aware, she had all this time, little by little, crept into his heart and being in the warmth of her presence he was surprised to find that there was the faintest flicker of life moving within him again.
LADY ALICE
The young woman's heart was racing and out of breath, but she couldn't see the finish line in sight. There didn't seem to be an end to what she was feeling, and she was surprised that she could still feel this way. People like her aren't supposed to feel the way they do. This stirring of the heart. Though there was a time when she believed she felt it once, it was a long time ago, and now she only remembered the shadow of its touch. It was like reaching heaven but never being allowed to enter its pearly gates. If you were to take my hand, she thought to herself, my heart would fall from my grasp and into yours.
In 1848, Mr Henrie returns to his home in Maidstone, Kent to attend the funeral of the Duke of Mayflower where he is reunited with Lady Mayflower, who has loved him ever since she was a little girl. She believes that Mr Henrie has finally come home to her. But there are secrets in Mayflower Manor that will change their lives forever.
In the Victorian Romance, ALICE by Josephine D'Aria, three people discover that love isn't always about the sweet longings of the heart and the tender flowering of spring. Sometimes it's about facing the truth of who we are and making sacrifices for the one we love.
