When a thirteen-year-old boy travels to the west to join his father, he realizes that the father-son relationship he idealizes will be difficult to attain, for his father is a poker dealer who has been thrown out of town and their future in the gold mines is hampered by a shiftless uncle and a meddling sheriff.
