Two patents, one (no. 2854) granted to civil engineer William Edward Newton in 1853 for improved machinery for drilling or boring rocks and other hard substances, the other (no. 3440) granted to Henry Jewitt of Kentish Town, Middlesex, in 1875 for improvements to the Argand gas-burner. Each patent consists of a manuscript document on vellum, attached to a large royal seal in a metal canister. Each patent is housed in a cloth case.
