Jeffrey Endecott is a wealthy, middle-aged gentleman who lives on a large New England estate. He has decided to run for the United States Senate and, accordingly, has invited a group of nine close associates to his place for the weekend in order to garner financial support for his campaign. At the end of the eveningas festivities, one of the guests is found at the bottom of Jeffreyas outdoor swimming pool, the chain of a shipas bell wrapped around his neck. Obviously, he has been murdered. Jeffrey immediately calls in a renowned retired private investigator by the name of Cornelius Pire to help the county sheriff solve the crime. Cornelius, who is a dear, long-time friend of Jeffreyas, discovers that his gray matter isnat as rusty as he thought it might be and ultimately reveals the murderer to the group in the manner of a cosy denouement.
