General description of the collection: The Edwin P. Smith papers consist exclusively of an end-of-tour oral history interview with Lieutenant General Smith as commanding general, United States (U.S.) Army, Pacific, 1998-2002. The interview contains his reflections on U.S. Army Pacific during his tenure from October 1998 to November 2002. Topics include: support to U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM); providing forces for East Timor (1999); relations with the Philippines; responsibilities of an Army major command; base operations (BASOPS) funding challenges; planning for interim brigade combat teams in Alaska and Hawaii; 25th Infantry Division (Light); I (1st) Corps; and planning for airborne task force in Alaska and the U.S. Army Japan / 9th Theater Support Command.
