Edward Edwards had been called the pioneer of Public Libraries and it is to him more than to any other man that we owe the municipal library in the form in which it has developed in this country since the first Public Libraries Act received the Royal Assent in Aust, 1850. This account of Edwards' life and career in London, Manchester, Oxford and the Isle of Wight is based mostly on his unpublished diaries, correspondence and miscellaneous papers.
