Two of the babies were initially recalled based on low T4 and the other 2 based on high TSH levels. If either T4 or TSH alone was used to screen these babies, either babies would have been missed. The study demonstrated that neither T4 or TSH alone is sufficient to detect congenital hypothyroidism and perhaps, ideally, screening test should use both T4 and TSH.
