After the move to Fort Sumter Thompson writes "That they intend to bombard us is evident ... but we are sure their attempt will prove a failure." He tells his father "in spite of all their [Confederate soldiers] I am almost sure they never will fire a shot at us, indeed I think they are only too glad to be let alone." He describes Colonel Wigfall coming to Fort Sumter carrying a white flag and begging the soldiers to stop firing. With terms of the surrender settled "thus ended the fight and here I am without a scratch." Letters written from Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and Fort Hamilton, New York.
