This study is designed to help focus & direct the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration's future programs & activities centred on sustainable land use, specifically in the area of healthy & productive agricultural lands. It begins with background on past assessments of Prairie Provinces land resources, the adoption of conservation practices, long-term growth objectives for Prairie agriculture, and socio-economic & environmental influences on Prairie agriculture. Chapter 3 reviews the current state of Prairie land & water resources, with information on soil quality, soil erosion, soil organic matter, water quality, and the state of riparian areas, rangeland, & seeded forages. Chapter 4 reviews Prairie land use & farming systems, identifying distinct land practices groups of similar land use & farming practices, their extent, characteristics, and interrelationships. Chapter 5 discusses issues facing the management of Prairie land resources, including those relating to government programs & policies, international agreements, public perceptions, the environment, demographic change, rural infrastructure, farm risk-taking, farm management, land tenure, and technological innovations. The final chapter discusses issues related to agricultural growth.
