These Thomas Francis Meagher papers (1846-1946) consist of originals and copies of Meagher's general correspondence, including a love letter (1855) to his fiance Elizabeth Townsend, letters (1848-1849) from Meagher while in a Dublin prison, and a letter (1901) and writings (undated) by him describing life in Van Dieman's land, Tasmania. Also included is correspondence (1897-1946) from Michael Cavanaugh, Mr. and Mrs. Meagher III, the Thomas F. Meagher Memorial Association, and a resolution from the Society of Montana Pioneers, all of which are concerning Meagher artifacts and family history; clippings (1853, undated); miscellaneous writings about Meagher; receipts (1867); a promissory note (1866) to John Rockfellow; and certificates of appointment (1865-1867) signed by Meagher in his capacity as acting territorial governor. [The copies in the collection were made from originals at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Royal Irish Academy Library, and National Library in Dublin, Ireland.
