Résumé du livre

Sir Clements Markham's handwritten proposal for a compendium of useful information related to Antarctica to accompany the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901. The completed manual was edited by George Murray and published by the Royal Geographic Society in 1901. Markham provided the preface to the published volume. The idea for the proposal was fashioned after the arctic manual carried on the 1875 Nares expedition to Ellesmere Island. Markham's submission proposes botanical, geological, meteorological and geographical topics. The published volume was carried on the expedition by Robert Falcon Scott on RRS Discovery. The proposal is accompanied by a July 27, 1903 letter from John Walter Gregory, then at the University of Melbourne, to a Miss Smith concerning the transfer of the document to her.
